🥣 Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add the cold cubed butter and rub it into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Add the egg yolk, sour cream, and vanilla. Knead gently until the dough comes together (don’t overwork it).
- Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
- In a small bowl, mix ground walnuts, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon (if using).
- Add milk little by little until the mixture holds together but isn’t too wet.
Step 3: Shape the Cookies
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 3–4 mm thick.
- Cut into 8 cm (3-inch) squares or circles.
- Place a small spoonful of walnut filling on each piece.
- Roll up and gently curve into a crescent (horseshoe) shape.
Step 4: Bake
- Place crescents on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes until lightly golden (not brown).
- Let cool for 5 minutes.
Step 5: Coat in Powdered Sugar
- While still warm, roll each cookie generously in powdered sugar.
- Once cooled, roll again for that beautiful “snow” coating. ❄️
💡 Tips
- Cold butter = flaky texture. Don’t let it soften.
- Don’t overbake — they should stay pale.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
- These freeze beautifully!
