I Overheard My Husband Offering My Doctor $500,000 to Make Sure I Never Left the Delivery Room Alive Part 2

I kept my eyes closed and my breathing steady as Desmond kissed my forehead and whispered, “Tomorrow, everything changes.” Inside, I almost smiled. Yes, it would. Just not the way he had planned. I had spent four years as a corporate compliance attorney before I married him, and I understood evidence. I had the recording. I had sent it to my attorney, my private cloud account, and my older brother, Bennett. All I had to do was survive the night and get to the hospital.

The next morning, I pretended to be groggy from the sedative Desmond thought he had given me. He helped me into the car, holding my hand with a tenderness that now made my skin crawl. At the hospital, I was wheeled into a private room. Dr. Preston Wexler came in with a smile that did not reach his eyes. He checked my vitals, reviewed my chart, and told me everything was progressing normally. I nodded and thanked him. I did not let on that I knew what he was planning.

When the nurses left the room, I asked Desmond to get me a cup of ice chips. The moment he stepped out, I grabbed my phone and sent Bennett a single text: It is time. Then I called my attorney and told her to have the police waiting outside the delivery room. I also asked the nurse to make sure a different doctor was present during my delivery. I told her I did not feel comfortable with Dr. Wexler and requested a second opinion. The nurse looked confused, but she agreed to page another physician.

Dr. Wexler returned a few minutes later and seemed surprised to see another doctor in the room. I told him I had changed my mind and wanted a different doctor to handle the delivery. His face went pale. He tried to reassure me, but I was firm. I told him I knew everything. I told him I had the recording. And I told him the police were already on their way. His hands began to tremble. He took a step back, then turned and walked out of the room without saying another word.

Desmond came back with the ice chips and saw the look on my face. He asked what was going on. I told him the truth. I told him I had heard everything. I told him about the recording, the money, and Fiona. His face went white. He tried to deny it, then tried to apologize, then tried to blame me. I did not listen. I simply pressed the call button and asked the nurse to bring security.

The police arrived within minutes. They arrested Desmond and Dr. Wexler. The recording was played for the officers. The evidence was undeniable. Desmond was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, and fraud. Dr. Wexler was charged with the same. Fiona was questioned and later charged as an accomplice. My brother Bennett stood by my side the entire time.

That afternoon, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl. I named her Hope. She was perfect. As I held her in my arms, I felt a wave of relief and gratitude wash over me. I had survived. My daughter had survived. And the man who had tried to destroy us would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The months that followed were difficult. There were court dates, legal battles, and endless questions. But I had my family, my friends, and my daughter. I also had the satisfaction of knowing that I had protected myself and my child. I had not been a helpless victim. I had been a survivor.

Today, Hope is a happy, healthy toddler. She will never know the man who tried to take her mother’s life. She will only know the love of her family. And I will spend every day making sure she knows that she is loved, she is safe, and she is strong. Just like her mother
